Boba Carrier Review & Giveaway

We see it all over the world, women working out in
the field or at markets with their children worn on their backs.
It is second nature to them, the work must get done and the babies
often have to go along- so they are wrapped in long scraps of fabric
and go along for the ride.
Imagine the close bond between those two;
Mom doesn't just plop her baby in a basket beside her
she remains close to her young one but manages to keep
her hands free to work.

Baby-wearing isn't just seen in third world countries.
Yes, most of these women seen above more than
likely wear their baby out of necessity but
I image the child to enjoy being close to their mothers.
A lot of mothers in more fortunate circumstances
have chosen to wear their babies for many reasons.

I discovered baby-wearing with my first child,Lillian,
but unfortunately was very uneducated and ill informed about
good carriers and proper safety measures.
I had a very inexpensive soft carrier and a sling
but both fit my plus size body funny
and neither worked well for me.
My BWing lasted only a few weeks and I assumed
I was just destined to carry my little one on my hip.
(Which KILLED my hips, back, and arms)

With the birth of my second child, Olivia, I was
given a stretchy wrap and instantly fell in love.
The ability to wear her while tending to my toddler
made our daily routine extremely easy; but
the joy was short lived as my wrap only held
babies up to 15 pounds.
(Olivia hit 15lbs at less than 3 months old.)
I was intimidated by the huge variety of woven wraps
so I started looking into a soft structured carrier
and that is when I heard about Boba!

Boba was created by the maker of the Sleepy Wrap,
when his child outgrew the stretchy wrap, but other
soft structured carriers were not comfortable for him.
Here is Boba's story:

"We are a big advocate of baby wrap carriers for
infants and small babies and our son virtually
lived in the Sleepy Wrap for his first 16 months of life.
As he became bigger we started looking for
something more practical to be able to continue carrying him.

Soft structured carriers were new to us.
We experimented with a few different carriers
available on the market.
It wasn’t so much that they were digging into our shoulders,
but more the feeling of our son not being secure
and leaning away from our bodies in the back carries.
He also complained that his legs didn’t feel good
even when seated facing our back in a wide seated carrier.

So for one year he refused to be carried.
Most would think that a blessing. Well, the problem
was that he still wanted to be carried, but only in our arms.
We started toying around with the idea of creating
our own soft structured carrier for toddlers after
successfully launching Sleepy Wrap more than 3 years ago.

We were always brainstorming and trying to figure
out how to make our design better and ended up
first adding a safety buckle so there would be no
spontaneous releases. Then a light bulb went on.
We just had the best idea- foot straps- to get that
digging fabric off of little hamstrings, prevent
bigger legs from just hanging and just give them a
place to rest- just like the rungs we rest our
feet on when we sit on a bar stool.
After eleven different prototypes and almost one
year of going back and forth, we finally got it right.
Our son turned 3 by the time our final prototype
was made and although he’s a big guy, he loves it.

We couldn’t compromise; we had to get it right.
They had to be butter soft and we even took the
extra step of making them with only certified organic cotton.
To top it all off, we decided to make them right here
in our home town of Boulder, CO with the
help of local mountaineering professionals.

And the Boulder Baby carrier- the “BoBa” was born."

The Boba carrier is soft structured baby carrier that is
designed to hold children from 15-45lbs.
Perfect for carrying either of my children;
Olivia(8months) at 23lbs
&
Lillian(2y8mo) at 33lbs

Boba can be worn as a front and back carrier
and generously fits most adults,
Even myself and my husband who are larger than most.

"No more picture Mama!"

The Boba has an attached foot strap for older children;
These unique leg straps:
  • enables a healthy sitting position for your child
  • provide proper leg support in the flexed abducted position
  • naturally tilt the pelvis, fills out hip sockets, aligns spine
  • the more leg support the less pressure absorbed by the spine
  • takes the pressure off of the hamstrings
  • reduces the leg dangle
  • gives feet a place to rest
  • ensures complete blood flow throughout legs
  • no pinching of the major nerve behind the thigh

Lillian definitely seemed much more comfortable with
the foot straps than she does in other back carriers.
The high rise back of the Boba is a great feature,
covering the whole back of Olivia and supporting
Lillian's back just as well.
I have no issues with Olivia trying to push away from
my back, she was always secure against me.

The buckle waist band and shoulder support are
oddly my favorite features.
Very easy to put on, even alone, and comfortable..
the buckles don't dig in to my skin.

Each Boba comes with a matching sleep hood
that detaches when not needed or can be rolled into
the small compartment.
This hood is perfect for a little extra privacy to nurse
or when baby takes a nap. I also use it when the sun is really
bright and beating down on her head or once it
was raining and I used it as an umbrella. :)

Boba is available in two different fabrics: organic or classic.
Organic is available in 3 colors and Classic is available in 6.

I chose the Pine Organic Boba!
  • made her in the USA.
  • 100% GOTS and OE100 certified organic cotton
  • 100% organic Texas cotton lining
  • butter soft
  • no snaps
  • no buttons
I am in love with my new Boba!
I wear it every chance I get.. almost daily.
With a toddler and a clingy baby I am constantly struggling
to keep them both content at the same time.
My mei-tai was a little too time consuming to wrap
all by myself but with the Boba I can get Olivia on my
back without any assistance, though it did take some practice.
The Boba is used every time we go to the park, zoo,
grocery shopping, when I wash dishes,
hang the diaper on the line, etc.
It is definitely a busy moms best friend.
Doing dishes with the Boba!
Even though my children are no lightweights
(23lbs and 32lbs)
when I carry them with the Boba they seem nearly weightless.
The Boba carrier distributes their weight properly;
No stress on the back, hips, arms or shoulders.

At the park with the Boba
When out in public with my Boba I always get comments,
it never fails! Someone usually asks me where I got it
(I'm thinking of handing out business cards ;) )
or makes a comment on how convenient it looks for me
or how comfortable Olivia/Lillian appear.

Boba keeps Olivia close to me at all times.
Olivia prefers to be worn!
Lillian even likes it too on occasion;
She is much more independent and would much rather
walk on her own, but at times when she is tired she
greatly enjoys going for a "back-ride".

Olive is very content
The Boba Carrier is very daddy friendly as well!
My hubby has no problem wearing it, though he hasn't mastered
getting Olivia on his back without assistance.

"Giddy up Daddy!"

I use the Boba the majority of times but when he needs it,
it is very simple. He is also much more comfortable in
the Boba Carrier than in our mei-tai.
Like I mentioned before we are both heavy but the
Boba fits us both great!

I love baby-wearing with my Boba carrier not only because it keeps my hands
free while holding Olivia, but I love that it promotes Attachment Parenting.
Like in other cultures, baby-wearing is out of necessity, it also
nurtures a healthy continued bond between child and parent.
